China’s XSI wins order from EPS to build LNG-powered tankers

China’s Xiamen Shipbuilding Industry (XSI) has secured a contract from Singapore’s Eastern Pacific Shipping to build LNG dual-fuel Aframax tankers.

XSI said in a statement on Monday the order includes four 113,600 dwt LNG dual-fuel vessels.

The vessels, designed by Shanghai Shipbuilding Research & Design Institute (SDARI), will be 249.9 meters long and 44 meters wide.

XSI did not provide the delivery dates of the vessels or the value of the contract.

LNG Prime invited EPS to comment on the new order.

A spokeswoman said EPS does not comment on its orders.

VesselsValue data suggests the vessels will be delivered in 2028.

Up to now, EPS will build up to 12 vessels at XSI, including container vessels and car carriers, according to the shipbuilder.

Earlier this year, Fujian Mawei Shipbuilding and XSI, both part of Fujian Shipbuilding Industry Group, signed a contract with EPS for the construction of PCTCs and MR product tankers.

The deal includes four LNG dual-fuel PCTCs with a capacity of 5,500 ceu and also four optional vessels.

121 LNG dual-fuel vessels

EPS has a large fleet of LNG-powered vessels, including containerships, tankers, bulkers, and PCTCs.

The spokeswoman said that EPS has 121 LNG dual-fuel vessels in total across segments. This includes 62 operational vessels.

Additionally, the total number of vessels in the EPS fleet stands at 300, including operational vessels and on order, according to the spokeswoman.

Based on a recent Clarksons research ranking companies with the largest alternative fuel fleet, EPS is the leader followed by CMA CGM, MSC, etc.

Last month, EPS completed its 250th ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation.

The milestone LNG bunkering operation took place in China.

EPS completed its first LNG bunkering operation in November 2020, the 50th operation in September 2022, the 100th operation in June 2023, the 150th operation and the 200th operation earlier this year.

This year, EPS ordered more LNG-powered containerships, LNG-powered PCTCs, and LR2 oil tankers in China.
