Reganosa wins contract for Avenir LNG’s small-scale terminal in Italy

Spain’s Reganosa has secured a contract to maintain and operate Avenir LNG’s Higas small-scale terminal located on the Italian island of Sardinia.

The new deal follows the recent award of a similar deal for Ghana’s new LNG import facility in the Port of Tema.

Reganosa says it now becomes the only firm in the world that manages up to three third-party LNG terminals, in addition to its Mugardos facility in Spain.

Higas, the operator of the Oristano facility owned 80 percent by London-based Avenir but also Italy’s Gas and Heat and CPL Concordia, awarded the deal to the Spanish firm.

Higas started building the $43.2 million terminal in Sardinia, first such facility in Italy, in 2018 and previously expected to launch it in the second half of 2019.

The EPC contractor and shareholder Gas & Heat said early January the facility achieved mechanical and electrical completion.

According to Reganosa, the small-scale terminal should start operations during the first half of this year.

The terminal features six horizontal low-pressure cryogenic Type C tank storage tanks with a total capacity of 10,800 cbm but it will also have a dedicated 7,500-cbm Avenir LNG carrier.

It will load up to 8,000 LNG trucks per year – equivalent to 180,000 tons per year – via two loading bays.

Additionally, LNG from the facility will mainly go for use as fuel for automotive, industrial, civil and marine industries.

The terminal will also have a connection to a natural gas pipeline system that will allow the fuel to be distributed to local industry.
