BP delivers US LNG cargo to Bulgargaz via Alexandroupolis FSRU

UK-based energy giant BP has delivered a liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo to Bulgaria’s Bulgargaz via Gastrade's Alexandroupolis FSRU in Greece.

The 2021-built 174,000-cbm, BW Lesmes, delivered the shipment to the 153,500-cbm FSRU, Alexandroupolis, on January 19, a spokeswoman for Gastrade told LNG Prime.

BW LNG’s ME-GI vessel, which is on a long-term charter to BP, brought the LNG shipment from the Freeport LNG terminal in Texas, its AIS data provided by VesselsValue shows.

BP has a long-term contract for Freeport LNG volumes.

In November last year, Bulgargaz picked UK-based BP Gas Marketing, a unit of BP, and US-based Venture Global Commodities to supply two spot LNG cargoes via the Alexandrouplis FSRU-based terminal in January and February.

Regas operations resume

Gastrade also announced in a separate statement on Friday “that the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal has resumed regasification services with maximum estimated available regasification capacity of 31,300,000 kWh/d.”

The firm said on Thursday that the Alexandroupolis LNG terminal “is unavailable for regasification services due to a technical issue.”

Gastrade said it “is continuing to assess the matter and will provide updates on any further developments.”

Fourth commercial LNG shipment

This new delivery marks the fourth commercial LNG delivery to the FSRU-based facility in Alexxandouplis.

Gastrade’s FSRU Alexandroupolis received its first commercial LNG shipment from Equinor’s Hammerfest LNG terminal in Norway on October 3, 2024.

This shipment was supplied to Bulgargaz by French energy giant TotalEnergies.

In addition, Total Energies also supplied Bulgargaz with one LNG shipment in November and the other in December.

The November LNG cargo was sourced from Sempra’s Cameron LNG terminal in Louisiana, while the December cargo arrived from Venture Global LNG’s Calcasieu Pass LNG terminal in Louisiana.

2025 shipments

Gastrade’s shareholders include founder Copelouzou, DESFA, DEPA, Bulgartransgaz, and GasLog.

This is Greece’s first FSRU and the second LNG import terminal, adding to DESFA’s Revithoussa LNG terminal.

The Alexandroupolis LNG terminal has a capacity of up to 5.5 bcm per year, or some 66.3 TWh per year.

Gastrade previously told LNG Prime that it expects to receive one LNG cargo per month at its FSRU-based LNG import terminal off Alexandroupolis from November 2024 to March 2025.

The Gastrade spokeswoman said that the company will provide updates for the rest of the year “in due time.”

According to Gastrade, 14 Greek and international companies are participating commercially in the project, committing almost all of the terminal’s capacity until at least 2030.

Besides Bulgargaz, Venture Global booked long-term capacity at Gastrade’s LNG import terminal.

Under the binding terminal use agreement, Venture Global has secured about 1 mtpa of LNG regasification capacity at the terminal for five years, beginning in 2025.

Venture Global said its capacity will account for about 25 percent of the total terminal capacity or about 12 LNG cargoes annually.

(This article was updated to say that Gastrade has resumed regasification services.)
