Fincanteri said in a statement on Monday that the deal, which is subject to financing an other typical terms and conditions, is worth more than 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion).
This marks the first time that Fincantieri will build vessels for Germany-based Aida Cruises, which already has LNG-powered vessels in its fleet.
Last year, Carnival ordered three giant LNG-powered vessels for its Miami-based unit Carnival Cruise Line at Fincantieri.
According to Fincantieri, the two new vessels will have 2,100 cabins each and will be equipped with multi-fuel engines capable of operating on LNG, bio-diesel, and “future sustainable fuels.”
The vessels are scheduled for delivery in early 2030 and late 2031.
Carnival said in a statement that these mid-sized vessels will be a new class of vessels in its fleet and fit between its 1,600 cabin Hyperion Class vessels and its more than 2,600 cabin Helios Class vessels.
With today’s order, Carnival’s newbuild pipeline includes eight new ships scheduled to enter service between now and 2033, including Star Princess this year and one each from 2027 to 2033.
Moreover, following the delivery of the two new ships, AIDA Cruises will have a total of 13 ships in its fleet, “further expanding its leadership position in the German cruise market,” it said.
