MSC books LNG-powered duo in China

Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC has ordered two LNG dual-fuel ropax ferries at China’s Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), according to brokers.

The deal for the two vessels with 3,500 lane meters includes two optional units, several brokers said.

Each of the vessels is reportedly worth about $140 million.

They are scheduled for delivery in 2027.

It appears that MSC ordered these ships for its Italian unit Grandi Navi Veloci (GNV).

GSI recently won two more LNG dual-fuel container vessels from Germany’s Peter Dohle.

Several brokers said the German owner had exercised an option from a 3+2 contract revealed in January this year.

Taiwan’s shipping firm Evergreen Marine recently also ordered ultra-large LNG-powered containerships at two yards in South Korea and China, including at GSI.

In South Korea, it appears that Evangelos Marinakis-led Capital Martime is expected to place an order for LNG dual-fuel vessels at Hyundai Mipo, brokers said.

The order includes six LNG dual-fuel containershsips with a capacity of 8,400 teu.

The vessels are said to be worth about $140 each and expected to be delivered in 2028.

DNV’s most recent data shows that there are now 690 LNG-powered ships in operation and 644 LNG-fueled vessels on order.

These statistics do not include smaller inland vessels or dual-fuel LNG carriers.
