Venture Global withdraws Delta LNG application

US LNG exporter Venture Global LNG is withdrawing its FERC application for the proposed 24.4 mtpa Delta LNG export facility in Louisiana. Instead, Venture Global will focus on expanding its Plaquemines LNG export facility in Louisiana.

In 2019, Venture Global Delta LNG and Venture Global Delta Express started the pre-filing review process with the US FERC.

Venture Global planned to build the LNG export terminal on an approximately 1,100 acre site, near Mile 54 of the Mississippi River, south of New Orleans.

“Throughout the pre-filing review process, Delta LNG has diligently engaged with all interested stakeholders, with a particular emphasis on engagement with the local community in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana—the location of Delta LNG’s proposed LNG export terminal,” Venture Global told FERC in a letter dated June 10.

However, Venture Global has subsequently determined that pursuing the Delta LNG project at this particular time would “not be the best use of its corporate resources or the resources of the Commission’s staff.”

Instead, Venture Global LNG has decided to focus its efforts in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana on its proposed Plaquemines expansion project.

The Plaquemines expansion project was accepted into the Commission’s pre-filing review process in April this year.

The project will be comprised of 24 LNG trains and certain related infrastructure expected to produce “at least 18.6 mtpa.”

“Venture Global LNG expects that, upon completion, the Plaquemines expansion project will produce approximately the same quantities of LNG as the proposed Delta LNG project, but on a faster schedule than the proposed Delta LNG project,” the company said.

“Accordingly, through this letter, Delta LNG is withdrawing the Delta LNG project from the Commission’s pre-filing review process,” it said

Venture Global’s LNG terminals

In April this year, Venture Global launched commercial operations at its 10 mtpa Calcasieu Pass LNG terminal in Louisiana, some 68 months from its final investment decision and 38 months after production start.

Moreover, the company continues to progress with the commissioning of the Plaquemines LNG project, which features 36 modular units, configured in 18 blocks. Each train has a capacity of 0.626 mtpa.

Venture Global also received approval from FERC to boost the capacity of its Plaquemines LNG terminal to 27.2 mtpa.

In addition, Venture Global recently initiated full mobilization and started site work at the company’s third LNG export facility, CP2 LNG.

In March, Venture Global announced it had launched the formal FID process for CP2 LNG.

The CP2 LNG plant site is situated adjacent to Venture Global’s existing Calcasieu Pass liquefaction plant in Louisiana.

It is expected to have peak production capacity of up to 28 mtpa.
