According to PetroChina, the work officially started on June 24, and it includes the LNG tank as well as other related facilities.
The project is worth about 1.6 billion yuan ($223 million).
After the completion of the tank, the total storage tank capacity of the LNG facility will reach 1.28 million cubic meters.
After two expansions, the LNG terminal now has six LNG tanks with a total capacity of 1,08 million cbm.
Back in 2011, PetroChina launched the first phase of the Rudong LNG terminal, which is located on an artificial island offshore of the city of Rudong.
This 3.5 mtpa phase included the construction of three LNG storage tanks.
After that, PetroChina launched two storage tanks under the second 3 mtpa phase in 2016.
Most recently, the LNG terminal added another LNG storage tank under the third 3.5 mtpa phase in 2021.
China’s natural gas imports rose by 9.9 percent to 131.69 million tonnes in 2024, while LNG imports increased by 7.7 percent to 76.65 million tonnes last year, with China remaining the world’s largest LNG importer.
However, Japan overtook China this year as the world’s biggest LNG importer.
During January-May, China imported 24.86 million tonnes of LNG, a decrease of 23.2 percent compared to the same period last year, and some 2.8 million tonnes of LNG less than Japan.
