Cheniere’s Corpus Christi plant currently liquefies natural gas at three operational trains, each with a capacity of about 5 mtpa.
In June 2022, Cheniere made the final investment decision on the Corpus Christi Stage 3 expansion project, worth about $8 billion, while compatriot Bechtel officially started construction on the project in October of the same year.
The project includes building seven midscale trains, each with an expected liquefaction capacity of about 1.49 mtpa.
In March 2025, Cheniere achieved substantial completion of the first liquefaction train at the Corpus Christi Stage 3 expansion project, while the company recently completed the second liquefaction train.
Construction report
Cheniere’s unit, Corpus Christi Liquefaction, said in the July construction report filed with the US FERC last week that the overall project completion rate for Stage 3 is 87.9 percent.
The project was 86.7 percent completed as of the end of June.
Stage 3 engineering and procurement were 99 percent and 100 percent complete as of the end of July 2025, respectively, while subcontract and direct hire construction work were 92.1 percent and 68 percent complete, respectively.
During July, key work fronts included aboveground piping in Train 2 – 6 and outside boundary limits (OSBL), concrete pours in Trains 4 – 7 and OSBL, underground piping installation in Trains 6 – 7 and OSBL, and equipment setting in Trains 3 – 7.
CCL said additional continued work included road improvements, drainage work, and mobilization of temporary facilities, equipment, and personnel.
Key work fronts for the Midscale Trains 8 & 9 project included site preparation activities, the company noted.
During August, Bechtel will continue installation and testing of aboveground piping, insulation of aboveground piping, and cable pulls at the third liquefaction train.
The train is expected to start producing LNG soon.
Last week, FERC granted CCL’s request to introduce feed gas into the warm end of Train 3.
Further expansion
Cheniere made a positive final investment decision to build two more midscale trains at its Corpus Christi LNG plant in June this year.
The CCL midscale trains 8 and 9 project is being built adjacent to the Corpus Christi Stage 3 project and consists of two midscale trains with an expected total liquefaction capacity of over mtpa of LNG and other debottlenecking infrastructure.
Upon completion of the project, and together with expected debottlenecking and CCL Stage 3, the Corpus Christi LNG terminal is expected to reach over 30 mtpa in total liquefaction capacity later this decade, according to Cheniere.
In addition, Cheniere received approval from the US FERC to initiate the environmental pre-filing review for its Corpus Christi Liquefaction Stage 4 project.
The trains will have a peak production capacity of approximately 24 mtpa of LNG.
