Sawgrass LNG & Power secures Barbados supply deal

Miami-based Sawgrass LNG & Power has once again been selected as the supplier of LNG to Barbados National Energy Company (BNECL).

Pennybacker Capital Management’s Sawgrass LNG & Power, previously known as Miami LNG, said in a statement that this latest award builds upon a partnership that began in 2016 and now continues into a new decade with LNG supply for Barbados.

The company stated that it will continue to provide LNG to support Barbados’ growing energy needs, but did not provide further details regarding the agreement.

“At BNECL, LNG plays a critical transitional role in our long-term vision of strategically diversifying our energy mix beyond traditional fossil fuels toward a more resilient, low-emissions energy system,” James Browne, officer-in-charge of BNECL, said in the statement.

“As an island economy, Barbados faces unique energy challenges that demand adaptability and resilience. This partnership enables us to focus on both short-term energy stability, the incremental integration of intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind, in addition to adding battery energy storage systems,” Browne said.

Last year, Texas-based Pennybacker Capital Management completed its acquisition of New Fortress Energy’s small-scale LNG production and distribution business in Miami, Florida.

Miami LNG rebranded as Sawgrass LNG & Power in April this year.

The company operates a liquefaction facility in Miami, producing over 100,000 gallons of LNG per day and with onsite storage of 270,000 gallons, serving customers via ISO containers in the Southeastern US, the Caribbean, and beyond.

In addition to serving power generation and industrial customers, Sawgrass LNG & Power supplies LNG for the growing marine bunkering and aerospace sectors, the firm says.
