Samsung Heavy said it had received technical certification from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and the Liberian flag state for the first time in the world for such a vessel at the Gastech conference and exhibition held in Milan last week.
The molten salt reactor was developed jointly by Samsung Heavy and Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI).
Its technology utilizes a liquid mixture of molten salt (liquid reactor fuel) and coolant to improve stability and energy efficiency.
During the event, Samsung Heavy also obtained multiple technical certifications for various eco-friendly digital integration technologies.
The shipbuilder received AiPs from DNV for its 80,000-cbm liquefied hydrogen (LH₂) carrier design, which has been optimized to reduce size and prevent heat influx, and from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its liquefied natural gas carrier equipped with wind-assisted propulsion.
In August, Samsung Heavy secured orders for six LNG carriers worth $1.55 billion.
These orders are tied to Denmark’s Celsius Tankers, a unit of Celsius Shipping, and Greece’s TMS Cardiff Gas.
Before these orders, Samsung Heavy secured an order for one LNG carrier in January this year, its first LNG carrier order in 2025. This order is also tied to Celsius Tankers.
The shipbuilder also won a preliminary contract for Eni’s second FLNG project in Mozambique, Coral Norte (Coral North).
