UGI Energy Services, or UGIES, announced the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the facility in a statement on November 25.
UGIES said the new Carlisle LNG storage and vaporization facility joins the company’s expanding network of LNG and peak shaving assets.
The opening comes ahead of the winter season.
The company noted that LNG facilities like Carlisle store natural gas in liquid form at extremely cold temperatures.
During peak demand periods, typically the coldest winter days, the stored LNG is warmed and converted back into gas, then delivered into the pipeline system.
This “peak shaving” capability allows UGIES to supplement pipeline supplies when customers need it most, ensuring reliable service when natural gas demand reaches its highest levels.
The Carlisle LNG facitliy has a storage capacity of 4 million gallons LNG and maximum daily deliverability of 40,000 Dth.
The toal cost of the facility is approximately $100 million.
Besides this faciltly, UGIES operates the Bethlehem, Steelton, Carmel Mobile, Stroudsburg Mobile, Reading Mobile, and Mountaineer Gas Mobile peak shaving LNG facilities.
According to its website, UGIES also operates the Manning LNG liquefaction and storage facility and the Temple peak shaving, storage, and liquefaction facility.
Both of the facilities have a liquefaction capacity of 120,000 gallons per day.
The US is the world’s largest exporter of LNG.
The Energy Information Administration expects the US to export 14.9 billion cubic feet per day of LNG this year, which is 25 percent more than last year.
