China’s LNG imports rise 13.6 percent in November

China reported a 13.6 percent rise in its LNG imports in November, while its pipeline gas imports increased by 7.9 percent compared to the same month last year. China also regained the title of the world's largest LNG importer from Japan in January-November of this year.

Data from the General Administration of Customs shows that China received 6.94 million tonnes last month.

Imports also rose compared to 5.76 million tonnes in the prior month, which marked a decrease of 10.3 percent year-on-year.

During January-November this year, China imported 60 million tonnes of LNG, a decrease of 13.7 percent compared to the same period last year.

Natural gas imports, including pipeline gas, reached 11.94 million tonnes in November.

China’s pipeline imports rose 7.9 percent year-on-year in November to 5 million tonnes, the data shows.

China’s natural gas imports rose by 9.9 percent to 131.69 million tonnes in 2024, the customs data previously showed, while LNG imports increased by 7.7 percent to 76.65 million tonnes last year, with China remaining the world’s largest LNG importer.

Japan was the world’s second-largest importer of LNG last year, but the country imported more LNG than China until November this year.

During January-November this year, Japan imported approximately 58.47 million tonnes of LNG, and 4.73 million tonnes in November.

This means that China imported approximately 1.53 million tonnes of LNG more than Japan during the eleven-month period.
