Germany’s state-owned LNG import terminal operator DET is expanding its executive management with the appointment of Martin Meurers as its chief operating officer, starting May 1.
In this role, Meurers will be primarily responsible for capacity marketing and the safe operation of the state-owned LNG terminals, according to a DET statement.
Meurers headed the division for policy issues in energy security at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy from 2022.
Prior to this, as director general, he was responsible for several key divisions there, including policy issues in economic policy, fiscal policy, and macroeconomic coordination, as well as international and European economic and monetary issues, DET said.
With Meurers, DET is gaining a “proven expert in energy, economic, and financial policy as well as international economic relations,” Peter Rottgen, DET CEO, said.
“His many years of experience in coordinating economic and energy policy issues, most recently in the area of energy security, provide the best foundation for managing the use of our state-owned terminals with regard to security of supply,” he said.
DET was founded during the 2022 energy crisis to operate the new state-owned LNG terminals.
“In a short time, DET has assumed a central role in ensuring Germany’s security of supply. I’m looking forward to becoming a member of this dedicated team and, together with Peter Rottgen and DET, making a direct contribution to the security and resilience of Germany’s energy supply,” Meurers said.
Regas volumes rising
DET has set a new record with its regasified volumes in the first quarter of this year.
Its three chartered FSRUs delivered more than 25 terawatt-hours (TWh) of natural gas into the German grid during the period.
This is a 2.5-fold increase compared to the previous year’s figure (10 TWh; Q1 2025) and corresponds to around 10 percent of Germany’s total natural gas storage capacity, according to DET.
DET operates two FSRU-based facilities in Wilhelmshaven and one in Brunsbuttel.
The company also continues to work on the Stade FSRU project.
