Spanish engineering and construction firm Tecnicas Reunidas has won a contract from Qatar Petroleum to work on the giant Qatari LNG expansion project.
QP said in a statement on Tuesday it has awarded a major engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract for its North Field expansion project to the Madrid-based contractor.
Under the deal, Tecnicas Reunidas will act as the EPC contractor for the expansion of existing liquid products including condensate, propane and butane storage and loading facilities.
In addition, the deal includes the expansion of import facilities for mono-ethylene glycol within the giant LNG complex in Ras Laffan, as well as other ancillary facilities and pipelines serving the North Field expansion project.
QP says it would utilize the new facilities to handle liquid products from the four new LNG trains comprising the North Field East (NFE) project, which is scheduled to start-up before the end of 2025.
Also, the facilities will support two new LNG trains comprising the North Field South (NFS) project.
The award of this contract is the culmination of FEED work that began in early 2018, and represents “another important milestone” to deliver on QP’s commitment to significantly increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity, the state-owned firm said.
The new deal comes months after QP announced a final investment decision on its $28.75 billion North Field East project.
Under the project, QP will build four mega trains with a capacity of 8 million tonnes per year in the Ras Laffan complex.
This first phase of the expansion project will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 to 110 mtpa.
QP also plans a second phase to further boost capacity to total 126 mtpa by 2027 as well as additional expansions.
The company’s unit Qatargas already operates in total fourteen LNG trains at Ras Laffan.
