South Korea’s KSOE wins orders for six containerships, one LNG carrier

South Korea’s shipbuilder Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering has revealed orders for six new LNG-powered containerships and one LNG carrier.

KSOE’s unit Hyundai Samho would build the 15,000 TEU vessels for a European company and the LNG carrier for an Asian firm, the firm said in two separate filings to the stock exchange.

Hyundai Samho will build the container vessels for about 1.29 trillion won ($1.08 billion) and deliver them by December 2024.

Also, the order for the 174,000-cbm LNG carrier has a price tag of about 259.5 billion won ($217 million) while Hyundai Samho will deliver this vessel by September 2024.

Besides these orders, KSOE said in a statement it had won orders from a firm in Oceania to build three feeder containerships. The price tag for all of the orders reaches 1.67 trillion won ($1.39 billion), it said.

It did not reveal any additional info on the new orders, the company’s first in 2022.

In November, KSOE said it had secured an order to build ten LNG-powered containerships for a European firm. Brokers said then France’s CMA CGM was behind the order.

One shipbuilding source told LNG Prime that Switzerland-based MSC could be behind the order for the six new containerships and South Korea’s SK for the LNG carrier, but we could not confirm this by the time the article was published.

KSOE has set a target for this year of $17.4 billion, compared to $14.9 billion last year. The shipbuilder and its three units have secured in total $22.8 billion worth of orders during 2021.
