UECC’s LNG-powered PCTCs to transport Oslo trams

United European Car Carriers (UECC) will be using its LNG-powered pure car and truck carriers to transport trams to Norway under a deal with the City of Oslo.

Norway-based UECC, a joint venture of of NYK and Wallenius Lines, will deliver the trams using its dual-fuel but also LNG battery-hybrid PCTCs.

UECC already started the deliveries and loaded the first tram onto its dual-fuel Auto Eco in Pasajes, Spain on September 11.

The firm then transshipped the vehicle onto the conventionally-powered Spica Leader in Zeebrugge that arrived in Drammen on September 19.

The shipping firm says it will deliver another four trams in 2020, with regular shipments starting in September 2021.

These shipments will continue through the delivery of all 87 vehicles scheduled to enter service in Oslo by the end of 2024.

UECC CEO Glenn Edvardsen said the company will take delivery of the first battery-hybrid PCTC at the end of 2021, with two more to follow.

“Once these vessels join our fleet, we expect to deliver the remainder of the new trams all the way to Norway using this world-leading eco technology,” he added.

For the Oslo delivery, UECC is cooperating with the Spanish mobility company CAF, producer of the trams, and freight forwarding firm Noatum Logistics (UGL).

The trams will be shipped partially assembled, with final assembly, testing and detailing to be completed upon delivery in Oslo.

Furthermore, UECC says the total value of the tram order is worth more than 4 billion Norwegian krone (360 million euros).
