Pieridae teams up with Bechtel on Goldboro LNG

Canada’s Pieridae Energy is joining forces with US engineering giant Bechtel to develop the proposed Goldboro LNG export project.

The firm said Tuesday it signed a services deal with Bechtel with three key points. These include launching a detailed review of the scope and design of the Goldboro LNG facility.

Under the deal, Bechtel is also tasked to develop an EPCC execution plan and deliver a final lump sum, turnkey contract price proposal by May 31, 2021.

Additionally, the deal includes engaging with the Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq First Nations. This is mainly for their participation in the construction of a large-scale work camp at the LNG site.

“This is a very positive step forward for our Goldboro LNG project,” said Pieridae CEO Alfred Sorensen.

“Bechtel has significant experience building and delivering global LNG projects, helping their customers deliver about 30% of the world’s LNG capacity over the past two decades,” he said.

Sorensen added Goldboro is a “shovel worthy and shovel ready project” that will create thousands of jobs and help put Canadians back to work in a Covid-impacted environment.

FID expected in 2021

To remind, Pieridae said in August it was in talks with five firms regarding a lump sum turnkey EPCC contract. This was in response after US engineer KBR backed out of signing the lump sum deal.

The 9.6 mtpa Goldboro project has secured majority of key permits also signing a 20-year contract with Germany’s Uniper.

The deal with Uniper is for all of the volumes from the first 4.8 mtpa Goldboro liquefaction train.

Furthermore, Pieridae has earlier this year delayed the final investment decision on the project due to Covid-19, also renegotiating deadlines with Uniper.

Pieridae now plans to start commercial LNG deliveries to Uniper between August 31st, 2025 and February 28th, 2026.

The new deal also extended the deadline for a FID to June 30, 2021.
