ABB’s propulsion to power Arctic LNG carriers

Swiss engineering group ABB has secured a contract from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering for six ice-class ships that will serve Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project.

ABB says the contract has a price tag of more than $300 million.

Under the deal, the firm will supply a comprehensive power and propulsion package for the ARC7 172,000-cbm vessels that will transport LNG along the Northern Sea Route.

To remind, Novatek’s Arctic LNG 2 project entered into long-term charter deals for the six tankers with Sovcomflot and MOL. Daewoo will deliver the ships during 2023.

Each of the newbuilds will feature a trio of the largest and most powerful Azipod propulsion units ever supplied for ships operating in ice, according to ABB.

Together, the giant 17 MW Azipod units will provide a total power of 51 MW or about 68,400 HP. This will enable the vessels to navigate safely through ice up to 2.1 m thick.

Furthermore, ABB will also provide generators, switchboards, transformers, electric drives and propulsion control systems.

The order follows the successful delivery of ABB’s technology for the 15-ship series servicing Novatek’s Yamal LNG project.
