Carnival Cruise Line’s new LNG-powered flagship, Carnival Celebration, was christened at its PortMiami homeport on Sunday.
With this, Carnival Celebration is launching year-round service from its hometown of Miami, according to a statement by Carnival Corporation’s Carnival Cruise Line.
Carnival Celebration’s first guests to board the ship from Miami departed on Monday on a special six-day Thanksgiving cruise, with visits to Grand Turk, Amber Cove and Nassau, the statement said.
On November 27, the ship would begin a rotation of week-long Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings that depart every Sunday and visit popular destinations, such as the Dominican Republic and St. Thomas, as well as Cozumel and Costa Maya, Mexico.
Carnival Cruise Line took delivery of the second LNG-powered cruise ship from Finland’s Meyer Turku on November 2.
Carnival Celebration will accommodate more than 5,200 guests, expanding Carnival’s overall capacity and adding a new option for guests sailing from Miami.
Debuting from the redesigned Terminal F at PortMiami, Carnival Celebration joins sister Mardi Gras as the second Carnival ship in the fleet with a liquefied natural gas propulsion system.
Mardi Gras entered service last year as the first ship in North America to run on an LNG propulsion system.
Besides these ships, Germany’s Meyer Werft is building the LNG-powered Carnival Jubilee for Miami-based Carnival Cruise Line as well.
This Excel-class ship is set to enter service next year.
