Lithuania’s KN offers Klaipeda FSRU regas slot

Lithuania’s KN is offering regasification capacity for one spot LNG cargo in March at the FSRU-based LNG import facility in Klaipeda.

The state-owned firm started accepting requests for the spot cargo capacity allocation on Monday.

“With this announcement the operator is keen to allocate capacity of one conventional size cargo (0.94 TWh) scheduled on 10th/11th March 2023 with fixed regasification schedule,” it said.

KN said it would accept requests until January 16, or until it receives the “first dully submitted request for spot cargo capacity.”

The firm noted that the terminal’s spot cargo capacity allocation is performed on a first-come-first-served principle.

Capacity boost

Last year, KN exercised its option to buy the 170,000-cbm FSRU Independence for $153.5 million, excluding VAT, from Hoegh LNG at the end of its current lease deal in 2024.

The FSRU has a regas capacity of 3.75 bcm but there are plans to boost the capacity up to 6.25 bcm due to very high demand as European and the Baltic countries look to replace Russian gas pipeline supplies and boost energy security.

KN and gas transmission system operator Amber Grid launched a non-binding open season for capacity expansion on December 17.

This would help the two firms to evaluate possibilities to expand the terminal’s regasification capacity as well the capacity of the gas transmission system in relevant entry and exit points.

According to KN, the implementation of the project should create additional LNG import capacity of up to 2.5 bcm/year preliminary starting from the second half of 2026.

The non-binding season lasts until February 1, 2023.
