Clean Energy in US LNG bunkering deal

US LNG supplier Clean Energy Fuels is joining forces with World Fuel Services to supply liquefied natural gas for two Pasha Hawaii container vessels.

Under the supply deal, Clean Energy would supply about 78 million gallons of LNG to World Fuel Services, according to a statement on Tuesday.

When operating from the Port of Long Beach, these ‘Ohana Class’ vessels would become one of the first LNG-powered container vessels to call on the US West Coast and the first to service Hawaii, the statement said.

LNG-powered George III and Janet Marie will join Pasha Hawaii’s fleet serving Hawaii.

The first ship would begin operation in the fourth quarter of this year, followed by the second “shortly thereafter”.

Also, Clean Energy’s cryogenics division will perform tank conditioning and first LNG bunkering at Keppel AmFELS’ Brownsville, Texas shipyard, supporting the vessel’s construction.

Clean Energy said it would provide LNG to the vessels from its plant in Boron, California. The firm is expanding the Boron LNG plant by adding a new train that increases production by 50 percent.

For LNG delivery, World Fuel Services has contracted with West Coast Clean Fuels to transport and load the LNG into the ship fuel tanks. The latter is a joint venture between Clean Marine Energy and Pasha Hawaii.
