Excelerate wraps up 3000th STS LNG op

US FSRU player Excelerate Energy has completed its 3,000th ship-to-ship (STS) operation since 2007.

According to a statement by Excelerate, the milestone was achieved on December 28, 2024, onboard its 138,000-cbm FSRU Excellence which received a cargo delivery from Maran Gas Maritime’s LNG carrier, Maran Gas Asclepius, at the Moheshkhali floating LNG (MLNG) terminal in Bangladesh.

Since 2018, the MLNG terminal supplies natural gas Bangladesh. It has a capacity of up to 600 million standard cubic feet of gas per day.

Excelerate did not provide further information regarding the STS transfer.

The 2005-built 145,823-cbm, Maran Gas Asclepius, delivered the shipment to the FSRU located offshore Bangladesh in the Bay of Bengal from the giant Ras Laffan LNG complex in Qatar, its AIS data provided by VesselsValue shows.

Qatar is the largest supplier of LNG to Bangladesh, which imports the fuel via its first LNG import facility, MLNG, operated by Petrobangla, and via Summit Group’s FSRU-based terminal.

Excelerate’s 138,000-cbm FSRU Summit LNG serves as the second LNG import facility operated by Summit.

In addition to providing FSRUs, Exclereate also delivers spot LNG cargoes to Bangladesh, and it signed a 15-year LNG supply deal with Bangladesh’s state-owned Petrobangla last year.

Excelerate joined forces with state-owned LNG giant QatarEnergy to deliver these supplies to Bangladesh.

Under the SPA with QatarEnergy, Excelerate will buy up to one million tons per annum of LNG from QatarEnergy to be delivered to FSRUs in Bangladesh for 15 years starting in January 2026.

Excelerate will buy 0.85 Mtpa of LNG in 2026 and 2027, and one Mtpa from 2028 to 2040.

Eleven FSRUs

Excelerate said it conducted the industry’s first commercial STS transfer of LNG back in 2007.

In April 2021, the US firm completed its 2000 STS transfer, and this milestone was also achieved at the MLNG terminal.

Excelerate operates ten FSRUs, one of the world’s largest fleets of such vessels, and these units are located worldwide.

In addition to these 10 FSRUs, Excelerate also ordered one 174,000-cbm FSRU at South Korea’s HD Hyundai Heavy Industries in 2022.
