NextDecade said on Monday that it expects to file a full application for this expansion with FERC in 2026.
“With five trains now under construction at Rio Grande LNG and space at the site to potentially double capacity, we are intently focused on the next phase of growth for NextDecade, and today we have advanced the permitting process for our expansion capacity by initiating a pre-filing with FERC for Train 6,” said Matt Schatzman, NextDecade’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer.
“We look forward to working with FERC and other agencies throughout the Train 6 permitting process,” Schatzman added.
NexDecade previously said that the sixth train is being developed adjacent to Train 5, inside the Rio Grande LNG site’s existing levee.
According to the firm, Train 6 operations could potentially begin as early as 2032, depending on the timeline for permits, commercialization, and financing.
Last month, NextDecade made the final investment decision on the fifth train at its Rio Grande LNG facility.
This FID came just over a month after NextDecade made a final investment decision on the fourth train.
Train 5 brings the total expected LNG production capacity under construction at Rio Grande LNG to approximately 30 mtpa.
It is commercially supported by 4.5 mtpa of 20-year LNG sale and purchase agreements (SPAs) with JERA, EQT Corporation, and ConocoPhillips.
NexdDecade said the guaranteed substantial completion date for Train 5, as well as the date of first commercial delivery (DFCD) under the Train 5 LNG SPAs, is anticipated in the first half of 2031.
Up to 10 trains
In addition to these trains, NextDecade is also working on the seventh and eighth trains at the Rio Grande LNG facility.
The firm is evaluating multiple areas on the Rio Grande LNG site for potential location.
Trains 6 to 8 are expected to have a capacity of approximately 18 mtpa.
According to NextDecade, there is sufficient space to develop up to ten liquefaction trains at the Rio Grande LNG site with a potential capacity of up to 60 mtpa.
