Venture Global adds more liquefaction blocks to Plaquemines expansion

US LNG exporter Venture Global LNG has added four more liquefaction blocks to the proposed brownfield expansion of its Plaquemines LNG terminal in Louisiana.

Venture Global revealed this in a letter sent to the US FERC dated July 14.

In March, Venture Global’s units Plaquemines Expansion and Venture Global Plaquemines began the pre-filing process at the US FERC for the $18 billion expansion project.

The two units received approval to start the Commission’s pre-filing review for the project in April, and they filed preliminary drafts of resource reports 1 and 10 for the project in May.

Since that time, the two Venture Global units have proceeded with project design and have increased the number of liquefaction blocks to be permitted from 12 to 16.

Each block features two trains.

As a result of this modification, the proposed production capacity of the project has increased from approximately 18.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) to approximately 24.8 mtpa, Venture Global told FERC in the letter.

Additionally, based on feedback received during the open houses conducted in May, the two Venture Global units have identified the need for additional workspace to alleviate and address concerns related to traffic congestion during construction.

The two firms have determined that a larger laydown area that is contiguous to the project site will reduce the number of vehicle and truck trips necessary during construction.

As a result, the duo has increased the proposed project footprint to include an additional approximately 586-acre area to the east of the previously submitted project footprint.

27.2 mtpa

Venture Global took a final investment decision on the first phase of the Plaquemines project with a capacity of 13.3 mtpa and the related pipeline in May 2022, while the company sanctioned the second phase in March 2023.

The full project, including the second stage, features 36 modular units, configured in 18 blocks. Each train has a capacity of 0.626 mtpa.

Earlier this year, Venture Global also received approval from FERC to boost the capacity of its Plaquemines LNG terminal to 27.2 mtpa.

In December 2024, Venture Global shipped the first Plaquemines LNG cargo.

The facility exported 29 LNG cargoes during the first quarter of this year and 51 cargoes during the second quarter.

Venture Global is targeting a COD (commercial operations date) for the Plaquemines project in the fourth quarter of 2026 for Phase 1 and in mid-2027 for Phase 2.
