Mining giant Anglo American is continuing to invest in LNG-powered vessels following a charter deal with U-Ming last year, but this time the firm becomes a shipowner.
China State Shipbuilding Corporation’s Shanghai Waigaoqiao said in a statement it would build two LNG-powered capesize bulk carriers for Anglo American’s shipping unit.
The duo signed the deal for the two 190,000 DWT dual-fuel dry bulk carriers on March 15, according to the yard.
This means that Waigaoqiao will build in total six LNG-powered capesize vessels for Anglo American as Taiwan’s U-Ming also ordered the chartered quartet at the Chinese yard.
London-based Anglo American previously said it would start using the LNG-powered vessels in 2023 to transport iron ore from Brazil and South Africa to the company’s global customer base.
Additionally, the vessels will help the mining firm to slash emissions as it looks to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040.
