China’s Hengli wins orders for LNG-powered vessels

China’s Hengli Heavy Industry, a part of Hengli Group, has secured orders for LNG dual-fuel containerships and tankers.

Hengli Heavy said in a statement on July 16 that it has secured orders for six vessels, including four LNG dual-fuel ships.

Under the orders, the shipbuilder will build two LNG dual-fuel Suezmax crude oil tankers for an unidentified company.

This contract also includes two optional vessels.

Several reports claim that Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping is behind this order.

In addition, Hengli Heavy will also build two LNG dual-fuel container vessels for an unidentified company.

The vessels will have a capacity of 22,000 teu.

Hengly Heavy said the contracted containerships are optional vessels of its previously announced batch of ultra-large container vessels.

Earlier this year, shipbuilding sources said that Switzerland-based shipping giant MSC and Hengli Heavy signed a shipbuilding agreement for six LNG dual-fuel vessels with a capacity of 22,000 teu.

With this, Hengli Heavy won orders to build 26 LNG dual-fuel vessels for MSC.

Hengli Heavy and Gianluigi Aponte-led MSC signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement in Geneva in August last year.

The two firms agreed to collaborate in a wide range of areas, including shipbuilding, engine manufacturing, ship repair, and vessel retrofitting.

MSC first booked ten LNG dual-fuel vessels with a capacity of 21,000 teu at the Chinese yard.

The shipping giant then ordered 10 more LNG dual-fuel vessels with a capacity of 24,000 teu.
