Chinese yard hands over Seaspan’s LNG-fueled containership

China’s Jiangsu New Yangzi, a part of Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, has delivered the seventh LNG dual-fuel container vessel with a capacity of 7,000 teu to Seaspan.

According to Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, the 272 meters long ZIM Sapphire started its maiden voyage on June 15.

The vessel features a type B LNG tank built by Jiangsu Tianyang Green Ship Technology, a unit of Yangzi-Mitsui Shipbuilding.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding is building in total 15 7,000-teu LNG-dual fuel containerships powered by MAN ME-GI engines for Seaspan.

This the seventh vessel in this batch, and they will all serve Zim under charter deals.

Zim and Seaspan signed charter deals for these vessels back in 2021.

Besides these ships, the two firms have also ten 15,000-teu LNG dual-fuel vessels on order at South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries.

ZIM Sammy Ofer is the first vessel in this batch.

These vessels feature MAN ME-GI engines and GTT’s Mark III membrane technology.

In addition to these vessels, Seaspan is looking to order more LNG-powered containerships.

Last month, LNG Prime reported that Seaspan has signed a letter of intent with China’s Hudong-Zhonghua to build LNG dual-fuel container vessels.
