CLP, CNOOC wrap up largest LNG bunkering op in Hong Kong

Hong Kong's CLP and China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) have completed what they claim is the largest single LNG bunkering operation in Hong Kong to date and the city‘s first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering with simultaneous cargo handling.

During the operation, CLPe, a wholly-owned unit of CLP Holdings, and CNOOC Guangdong Water Transport Clean Energy delivered LNG to the container vessel Hanoi Express, owned by Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd, during cargo handling at Kwai Tsing Container Terminals on June 5.

CNOOC’s 30,000-cbm, Hai Yang Shi You 301, supplied the LNG to the container vessel, according to a statement by CLP.

“Around 10,000 cubic metres of LNG was supplied to the vessel, marking the largest single LNG bunkering operation in Hong Kong to date and the city‘s first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering with simultaneous cargo handling,” the statement said.

CLP said the milestone operation takes Hong Kong a step closer to becoming a “high-quality green marine fuel bunkering centre” and further consolidates its position as an international maritime hub.

Future cooperation

In November last year, the two firms joined forces to provide LNG bunkering services in the port of Hong Kong.

CLP said this bunkering operation serves as a pilot project for the partnership, paving the way for future cooperation and attracting international oceangoing vessels to Hong Kong.

CNOOC has two operational LNG bunkering vessels in China.

In July 2024, CNOOC’s new LNG bunkering vessel, Hai Yang Shi You 302, completed its first operation in China’s Ningbo-Zhoushan port. This vessel has a capacity of 12,000 cbm.

This LNG bunkering ship adds to Hai Yang Shi You 301.

CNOOC claims this is the world’s largest LNG bunkering vessel and it completed the first operation with this vessel in January 2023.

On the other hand, Hong Kong’s first FSRU-based LNG import facility, owned by a joint venture of CLP Power and HK Electric, started commercial operations in 2023.

MOL’s 263,000-cbm FSRU Bauhinia Spirit serves the offshore terminal under a charter deal.

Regasified LNG is being sent to CLP Power’s Black Point power station and HK Electric’s Lamma power station, raising the power companies’ low-carbon generation capability and fuel supply security in support of Hong Kong’s energy transition.
