GTT clinches tank gig for seven LNG carriers

France’s GTT has secured a new tank design order from South Korean shipbuilder Hanwha Ocean for seven liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.

GTT announced on Tuesday that it received the order in the fourth quarter of 2025.

According to the LNG tank specialists, Hanwha Ocean will build the LNG carriers for a European shipowner.

GTT will design the cryogenic tanks of the vessels, which will each offer a total capacity of 174,000 cbm.

The tanks will be fitted with GTT’s NO96 Super+ membrane containment system.

Delivery of the vessels is expected between 2028 and 2029.

Last month, Hanwha Ocean secured an order from a European shipowner to build seven LNG carriers.

The shipbuilder said that it will deliver the LNG carriers by June 30, 2029.

Hanwha Ocean said the shipowner will pay approximately 2.59 trillion won ($1.75 billion) for these vessels.

This means that one LNG carrier costs approximately $250 million.

Norwegian owner Knutsen announced in a separate social media post that it has signed long-term charter agreements with European energy companies Equinor, Eni, and SEFE for five LNG carriers.

The shipowner also said that the new LNG carriers will be built by Hanwha Ocean at its Geoje shipyard in South Korea and are scheduled to enter service between 2028 and 2029.

Before this move, Knutsen signed a charter deal for one newbuild LNG carrier with Italian energy firm Edison, a unit of EDF.

Hanwha Ocean will also build this 174,000-cbm LNG carrier, which will start supporting Edison’s shipping activities from 2028.
