French LNG containment giant GTT has won an order from South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering to design tanks for four new LNG carriers ordered by Japan’s MOL.
GTT said in a statement it would design tanks of four Arc4 174,000-cbm LNG carriers for navigation in cold temperatures.
Each tank would be fitted with GTT’s membrane containment system adapted to the extreme conditions of navigation in Arctic waters, it said.
DSME would deliver these vessels in 2024, GTT said without providing any additional information.
MOL said in September it had ordered four 174,000-cbm LNG carriers at DSME for delivery in 2024.
The Japanese shipping giant signed a charter deal for these ships with a unit of Russian independent LNG producer Novatek.
Furthermore, the newbuilding LNG carriers would feature MAN Energy Solutions engines, which offer “major improvements in fuel efficiency.”
They would also adopt a new design that generates less boil-off gas from cargo tanks through the use of the re-liquefaction unit on board, and a shaft generator system that uses the rotating propeller shaft for power generation, MOL said.
Novatek operates the giant Yamal LNG project but it is also moving forward with the construction of its second export project in the Arctic, Arctic LNG 2.
The two firms have previously partnered on vessels for both of the projects, including Arc7 ice-class LNG tankers.
Also, MOL said earlier this year it would buy stakes in two giant floating LNG storage units from Russian state leasing agency GTLK. The units will serve Novatek’s LNG transshipment terminals in Kamchatka and Murmansk.
These four Arc4 LNG carriers would probably ship LNG from these transshipment terminals to final consumers.
