HD Hyundai Heavy to install new type of engine on Excelerate’s FSRU

Excelerate Energy’s new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), which is currently under construction at South Korean shipbuilder HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, will feature the world’s first H54DF HiMSEN engine.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries-Engine and Machinery announced last month that it has completed the factory acceptance test (FAT) of the H54DF HiMSEN engine. The test was completed at HD Hyundai Engine in Yeongam.

The FAT was conducted with the participation of Excelerate Energy, classification society BV, and HD Hyundai Heavy,

The engine will be installed on the 3407 FSRU currently under construction by HD Hyundai Heavy.

The 6-cylinder H54DF engine is a dual-fuel engine capable of running on both natural gas and diesel, with a power output of around 12,000 horsepower.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries-Engine and Machinery claims it boasts the highest power output per cylinder among 4-stroke engines worldwide.

Also, the engine “significantly” reduces harmful emissions such as sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides, as well as greenhouse gases.

It offers approximately three times the output of existing dual-fuel engines. Additionally, it provides an 18 percent increase in power compared to diesel engines, the firm claims.

In October 2024, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries officially started building Excelerate Energy’s new FSRU.

US FSRU player Excelerate said at the time that the next milestone, keel laying, is expected in March 2025.

In October 2022, Excelerate ordered this FSRU at HD Hyundai Heavy.

The FSRU will have a maximum regasification capacity of one billion standard cubic feet per day (1,000 MMscf/d).

The US firm will pay about $332 million for the construction of the vessel.

HD Hyundai Heavy will deliver the unit to Excelerate by June 2026.
