In August, LNG Prime reported that HMM launched a tender for six firm plus six optional LNG dual-fuel container ships.
The sources said that HMM selected HD Hyundai Heavy to build eight LNG dual-fuel vessels with a capacity of approximately 14,000 TEU, while Hanwha Ocean is expected to build four vessels.
The Hanwha Ocean vessels are expected to feature type high-manganese LNG tanks.
On the other hand, the LNG fuel tanks of the HD Hyundai Heavy vessels are expected to be equipped with GTT’s Mark III Flex containment tech.
It remains unclear whether the shipbuilding deals have already been signed.
The sources said that HMM was still in negotiations regarding the contracts last week.
Intermodal and other brokers put a price on each of the vessels at $180-185 million.
This means that the entire order could be worth $2.2 billion.
DNV’s latest data shows that there are now 790 LNG-powered ships in operation and 631 LNG-fueled vessels on order.
Moreover, 209 LNG-powered containerships are in operation, while LNG-powered containerships account for a big part of the orders with 357 units.
