South Korean shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Samho Heavy have won orders to build in total ten LNG carriers worth about $2.2 billion.
Parent KSOE said on Thursday HHI would build eight while HSHI would build two 174,000-cbm LNG carriers.
The HHI LNG carriers are worth about 2.23 trillion won ($1.71 billion), or some $214 million per vessel.
HHI will build these ships for a European owner and deliver them by November 2026.
KSOE did not reveal whether this order is related to the giant Qatari shipbuilding program but the price is almost the same as the previous two HHI won from an European firm and tied to Norway’s Knutsen.
Two shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that Knusten had ordered these eight LNG carriers as well.
Samsung Heavy also recently announced an order for 12 LNG carriers with a similar price and related to the Qatari program.
QatarEnergy previously signed deals with South Korea’s biggest three shipbuilders, including DSME, Hyundai Heavy, and Samsung Heavy, to secure more than 100 vessels worth about $19.2 billion.
DSME also won four LNG carrier orders related to this program.
Sources previously said that more announcements are expected to follow as QatarEnergy has declared 18 slots each at DSME and Samsung Heavy as well as 17 slots at HHI under the program.
LNG carrier duo at HSHI worth about $491 million
As per the HSHI ships, they have a price tag of 637.1 billion won ($491 million), or some $245 million per vessel, which is a very high price for a single LNG carrier.
HSHI would build these ships for an Oceania-based owner and deliver them by August 2026, KSOE said.
Sources said that Greece-based shipping firm TMS Cardiff Gas is behind this order for two LNG carriers.
According to KSOE, all of the LNG carriers will have 299 meters in length, 46.4 meters in width, and 26.5 meters in height.
The firm and its units have won orders for in total 34 LNG carriers this year.
