Hyundai Samho to build LNG carrier trio for about $765 million

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries will build three LNG carriers for about $765 million under a new order revealed on Thursday.

Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) said that its unit Hyundai Samho will build the three LNG tankers for more than 1 trillion won ($765 million) or some $255 million per vessel, which is a record price for one 174,000 cbm LNG carrier.

The shipbuilder aims to deliver the three ships to an undisclosed North American owner by December 2027, KSOE said without revealing further information.

Shipbuilding sources told LNG Prime that Japan’s shipping giant NYK is most likely the owner behind this order.

Prior to this order, Hyundai Samho secured a contract to build two LNG carriers for about $253 per vessel for Greece’s Capital Gas.

In 2023, KSOE and its units won orders for 44 vessels, including eight LNG carriers, worth some $6.11 billion.

The group achieved about 39 percent of its annual order target of $15.7 billion.
