Japan’s Inpex said it would deliver this week a carbon-neutral LNG shipment to compatriot city gas supplier and LNG importer Toho Gas.
Inpex said in a statement on Monday the LNG cargo would arrive at the Chita terminal near Nagoya, where Toho Gas jointly operates the LNG facility with Jera, on September 18.
The cargo will come for the Inpex-operated Ichthys LNG export plant near Darvin, Australia.
Furthermore, Inpex said it would offset the carbon footprint of the LNG shipment using carbon credits applied to greenhouse gas emissions across the entire natural gas supply chain.
This includes upstream production, liquefaction, transportation, regasification, marketing but also combustion by customers in Japan, according to the Ichthys LNG operator.
“The carbon credits used to offset the shipment’s carbon footprint meet the Verified
Carbon Standard deriving from greenhouse gas reduction efforts at global forest conservation projects, etc,” Inpex said.
Inpex did not provide any additional details.
This shipment follows a similar deal Inpex recently announced with compatriot city gas supplier and terminal operator Shizuoka Gas.
Also, Inpex has in July received its first carbon-neutral LNG cargo at the Naoetsu import terminal in Niigata prefecture as it looks to further slash its emissions.
On the other side, Toho Gas welcomed its first carbon-neutral LNG shipment at the Chita terminal in April this year.
The company also said in July it had signed contracts to deliver carbon-neutral city gas to six companies.
