Japan’s shipping giant MOL continues to expand its fleet of dual-fuel vessels with the delivery of a new LNG dual-fuel pure car and truck carrier.
MOL said on Tuesday it held a naming ceremony for the new LNG-fueled PCTC Celeste Ace at Onishi Shipyard of Shin Kurushima Dockyard in Ehime, Japan.
The firm said this is the sixth LNG-fueled car carrier under MOL’s operation.
The PCTC is 199.9 meters long and 38 meters wide and has a maximum capacity of 7,050 units.
The new LNG dual-fuel vessel will transport cars, including those produced by Nissan Motor.
MOL is building a fleet of LNG-powered vessels, including PCTCs.
The firm has set a target to operate 90 LNG-powered and methanol-fueled vessels by 2030.
In March this year, MOL took delivery of the LNG dual-fuel car carrier Cerulean Ace from Onishi Shipyard and Turquoise Ace in July from Imabari’s Tadotsu Shipyard.
The Japanese firm has decided to operate 14 new LNG-fueled car carriers under the “Blue” series.
According to MOL, the use of LNG fuel reduces carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by about 25-30 percent, sulfur oxide (SOx) emissions by about 98 percent, and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by about 85 percent compared to comparable vessels using conventional fuel oil.
