Rolls-Royce is providing gas engines for an LNG-powered hybrid tug that will operate in Singapore.
The firm will deliver two mtu 16V 4000 M55RN gas engines to Sembcorp Marine integrated yard.
Jurong Marine Services, a unit of Sembcorp Marine, will operate the vessel claimed to be the world’s first LNG hybrid tug.
In addition, the new LNG-hybrid tug is the first of 12 vessels that Sembcorp Marine plans to design and build. These tugs will replace the existing diesel-powered ones between now and 2025.
The main propulsion system of the tug will provide a combined total power of 2984 kilowatts at 1600 RPM.
Furthermore, the LNG-hybrid propulsion system will be able to provide flexibility to cater for various operational modes and is able to switch between low emission LNG engines and zero-emission battery power, Rolls-Royce said.
Sembcorp Marine should complete the vessel by the end of this year.
