Samsung Heavy develops new liquefaction tech

South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries said it has developed a new liquefaction technology, boosting its competitiveness in the FLNG industry.

The yard said in a statement on Thursday it held a demonstration of the technology at its LNG pilot test facility located within the Geoje shipyard.

According to the shipbuilder, the event gathered officials from some of the major LNG developers, including Eni, Equinor, Golar LNG, and Petronas, as well as officials from classification societies.

Samsung Heavy says the “Sense IV” technology can produce more than two million tons of LNG per year and has high energy efficiency.

In addition, it can slash the power consumption required for the production of one ton of LNG by up to 14 percent compared to the existing liquefaction process, the shipbuilder claims.

With the new technology, Samsung Heavy expects to be in a better position than its rivals in winning orders for new FLNG facilities.

The shipbuilder has just delivered Eni’s Coral Sul FLNG which is on its way to Mozambique. It built three out of the four FLNG units ordered so far.
