Samsung Heavy gets OK from LR for new hydrogen tank

South Korean shipbuilding giant Samsung Heavy Industries has received basic design approval from classification society LR for its new large liquefied hydrogen tank.

Samsung Heavy said in a statement on Friday it won the approval in principle for the design of a membrane-type liquefied hydrogen storage tank and a 160,000-cbm liquefied hydrogen carrier.

The yard says this marks a first in the shipbuilding industry.

Also, the storage tank developed independently by Samsung Heavy “safely stores liquefied hydrogen at minus 253 degrees Celsius by creating an insulated space inside the hull.”

Samsung Heavy said the new hydrogen storage tank provides “an opportunity to break free from dependence on foreign companies’ technology, unlike the storage tanks of LNG carriers.”
