Taiwan’s CPC gets first LNG cargo as part of Cheniere deal

Taiwan’s CPC Corp received on Sunday the first LNG cargo under a long-term contract it has with US exporter Cheniere.

CPC said the 149,172-cbm Fuji LNG delivered the maiden cargo to its Taichung LNG import terminal from Cheniere’s Corpus Christi plant in Texas.

To remind, the duo signed a 25-year deal for some 2 million tonnes per annum of LNG back in August 2018.

CPC added it would receive about 30 cargoes per year on a delivered ex-ship basis from Cheniere as Taiwan looks to diversify its energy sources and increase gas-fired power generation.

The state-owned company currently operates two LNG import facilities incuding Taichung and the Yung-An facility in Kaohsiung but it also plans a third facility in Taoyuan.

Additionally, Taipower is building Taiwan’s first LNG receiving and regasification facility not owned by CPC in Taichung.

On the other side, Cheniere currently operates the 25 mtpa Sabine Pass LNG plant in Louisiana, the largest such facility in the US, and is adding a sixth train for a total capacity of about 30 mtpa.

Moreover, the firm is finalizing works on the third Corpus Christi train boosting the total output to 15 mtpa.
