Vietnam’s Cai Mep LNG terminal gets commissioning cargo

Nebula Energy’s AG&P LNG and Vietnam's Hai Linh have received the first commissioning cargo at their Cai Mep LNG import terminal in Vietnam, according to shipping data.

The 2006-built 145,000-cbm steam LNG carrier, Blue Dragon I, previously known as Stena Blue Sky, was at the Cai Mep LNG terminal in Vung Tau district, South Vietnam, on Wednesday, according to AIS data provided by VesselsValue.

Blue Dragon I delivered the shipment from the Gazprom-operated Sakhalin LNG export plant in Rzssia, the data shows.

Social media posts also show the LNG carrier docked at the Cai Mep LNG terminal’s jetty.

The Cai Mep facility is the second LNG import facility, adding to the PetroVietnam Gas-operated 1 mtpa Thi Vai LNG terminal in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

In May last year, Nebula Energy’s AG&P LNG and its partner Hai Linh announced plans to launch a tender for a commissioning cargo for their Cai Mep LNG import terminal.

The partners said at the time that the start of commercial operations of the Cai Mep LNG terminal is targeted for September 2024.

Earlier the same year, AG&P LNG purchased a 49 percent stake in the $500 million facility from Vietnam’s Hai Linh.

The terminal has a capacity of 3 mtpa, expandable to 6 mtpa.

It has pipeline connectivity to Vietnam’s largest power generation complex, the Phu My industrial zone, with a gas-fired capacity of 3.9 GW.

Moreover, the LNG terminal has three onshore tanks totaling 220,000 cbm of LNG storage, and LNG breakbulk capabilities that allow it to reload LNG into smaller vessels.

It also has 14 truck loading bays for LNG and CNG filling.
