Chinese state-owned power utility Guangdong Energy said it has started building its large LNG import facility in Huizhou.
To mark the construction start, Guandong Energy held a ceremony on July 23 attended by many officials, including representatives from ExxonMobil in China.
The US energy giant signed a strategic cooperation deal with the Guangdong government in 2018 to invest in a chemical complex but also the Huizhou LNG terminal in the southern coastal province of Guangdong. Under that deal, ExxonMobil would also supply the LNG terminal.
Guandong Energy did not provide any additional information regarding ExxonMobil’s position in the new facility.
The Chinese firm says the first phase of the Huizhou terminal would include one jetty that can receive the world’s largest LNG carriers.
In addition, the facility will feature three 200,000-cbm tanks.
The terminal will have a capacity of 4 mtpa and the total costs would reach 6.6 billion yuan ($1.01 billion), according to Guangdong Energy.
It plans to launch the first phase of the LNG import facility by the end of 2023.
