Woodside awards Scarborough FPU deal to McDermott

Australian LNG player Woodside has contracted Houston-based McDermott to build its floating production unit (FPU) for the Scarborough project offshore Australia.

The new award follows the completion of the front-end engineering design (FEED) for the Scarborough JV which includes BHP Petroleum.

McDermott said in a statement on Monday it would provide engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning (EPCIC) services for the FPU.

The integrated scope also includes the design, fabrication, integration, transportation and installation of the hull and topsides, it said.

It did not reveal the price tag of the contract.

Woodside made in November the final investment decision on the Scarborough and Pluto LNG Train 2 developments worth about $12 billion.

The approval also includes new domestic gas facilities and modifications to the first Pluto 4.9 mtpa train on Western Australia’s Burrup Peninsula.

Pluto Train 2 will process gas from the Scarborough offshore gas resource and have a capacity of about 5 mtpa.

McDermott to build topside in China

McDermott said it would build the topside at its joint venture fabrication yard, Qingdao McDermott Wuchuan, in China. The topside would weigh about 30,000 tons.

Also, the project scope includes a battery energy storage system to reduce emissions on the topsides and support Woodside’s net emissions reduction targets, it said.

McDermott’s Kuala Lumpur and Gurgaon offices will work on the project’s engineering, while the company’s subsea team in Perth will support transport, installation, hook up and commissioning activities.

The FPU processes natural gas, which includes gas separation, dehydration and compression as well as mono ethylene glycol regeneration and produced-water handling.

Designed for a production capacity of up to 1.8 billion standard cubic feet per day, the topside would be connected to the semi-submersible hull and pre-commissioned prior to transportation and installation in a water depth of 950 meters, about 400 kilometers offshore Western Australia, it said.

McDermott added the FPU would have the capability to operate remotely and with minimal staff during normal production operations.
