Germany-based TGE Gas Engineering has secured a contract from Flogas Britain for the conversion of the Avonmouth LNG facility into an LPG terminal.
National Grid closed the storage facility back in April 2016 as it was approaching the end of its technical life.
The terminal was previously ensuring security of supply with peak shaving capability to the UK’s natural gas grid.
TGE will now convert the facility to adapt it for LPG storage.
The upgrade conversion works include a new buffer storage and send-out and transfer system, TGE, a unit of China’s CIMC, said in a statement.
The works also include road tanker loading and offloading facilities, and all associated equipment and utility systems.
The facility will have the capacity to store 34,564 tonnes of LPG.
It will be the UK’s largest such facility, according to Flogas.
The LPG and LNG supplier expects to start full commercial operations at the converted facility by May 2022.
