Avenir expands European ops with LNG delivery to Finland’s Hamina terminal

UK-based LNG firm Avenir LNG said it had completed its first delivery to the new import terminal in Finland’s Hamina port.

The joint venture of Stolt-Nielsen, Hoegh LNG, and Golar LNG said in a social media post on Tuesday it joined forces with Hamina LNG and Alexela to realize its first delivery to the Hamina terminal.

The 7,500-cbm LNG bunkering and supply vessel, Avenir Aspiration, previously loaded LNG at the Murgardos terminal in Spain.

Hamina LNG, a joint venture consisting of Finland’s Hamina Energy, tech firm Wartsila, and Estonia’s energy company Alexela, launched commercial operations at the small LNG facility in the beginning of October.

Later during the same month, the facility worth more than 100 million euros ($102 million) received its first commercial cargo from Belgium’s Zeebrugge onboard the 6200-cbm LNG bunkering vessel, Optimus, owned by Estonia’s Elenger and chartered by Titan.

Alexela bought the first commercial LNG cargo.

Hamina LNG provides storage services from one 30,000-cbm LNG tank as well as regasification and injection services into the Finnish gas transmission network with a daily capacity of 4,800 MWh.

With the current regasification capacity, the terminal can inject about 1,7 TWh of natural gas into the transmission network annually.

Avenir expanding European network

Besides the new delivery, Avenir Aspiration’s sister ship Avenir Ascension is also sailing towards the Hamina terminal to deliver another shipment, according to Avenir.

“Efficient movement of gas and LNG between EU member states is critical to bolstering energy security across the bloc as a whole,” Avenir said.

The firm said these deliveries into Finland further advance the company’s strategy of becoming a “leading supplier” of LNG across Northern Europe.

Earlier this year, Avenir joined forces with Lithuanian gas supplier Achema Gas Trade to complete its first delivery to the small-scale LNG terminal in the port of Klaipeda.

Avenir is also planning to buy Sweden’s Oxgas, the developer of an LNG and bio-LNG terminal in the Port of Oxelosund, and has made a move to sell and distribute LNG by trucks and small-scale LNG vessels from the FSRU-based Krk terminal in Croatia.
