Brittany Ferries, Stena ink deal for two new LNG-powered vessels

French shipping firm Brittany Ferries said it has signed a deal with Sweden’s Stena RoRo for two new LNG-powered ferries.

Brittany Ferries said the two vessels would be built in China but it did not reveal the name of the yard.

The duo has already two E-Flexer class LNG-powered ships under construction at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard. Salamanca will join Brittany Ferries in 2022, followed by Santona in 2023.

Brittany Ferries will charter the two new vessels from Stena. In addition, the firm has an option to purchase the LNG-powered ships after four years.

They will replace older vessels working from Portsmouth to Ouistreham and Saint-Malo.

Both of the 194 meters long hybrid vessels will sail on LNG but they will also feature batteries and shore-side power.

Also, the deal is reportedly worth about 220 million euros ($258 million).

The vessels will join Brittany Ferries in 2024 and 2025.
