Equinor eyes LNG carrier order

Norwegian energy firm Equinor is interested in booking liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers at yards in South Korea and China, according to shipbuilding sources.

The company is interested in up to four 174,000-cbm LNG newbuilds, sources told LNG Prime on Monday.

The Norwegian firm will probably charter the LNG carriers.

It remains unclear whether Equinor would pursue the order directly or via a shipowner.

No further details have been revealed.

Equinor operates the 4.3 mtpa Hammerfest LNG export plant in Norway. which is mainly served by the 2006-built LNG tankers Arctic Voyager, Arctic Lady, and Arctic Princess.

In 2023, Equinor also signed a long-term deal to buy LNG from US LNG exporting giant Cheniere.

Under the sales and purchase agreement, Cheniere Marketing will supply about 1.75 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG to Equinor on a free-on-board basis.

Delivery of half of the volume associated with the SPA will start in 2027.7

Equinor said at the time that the LNG carrier Isabella, which it charters from Greece’s Maran Gas, may be used to transport volumes from Cheniere’s Corpus Christi plant.

In addition to these developments, Equinor is also developing the delayed Tanzania LNG export project with Shell and other partners.

The project has been in development for years.
