Gasrec’s bio-LNG sales surge

UK fuel supplier Gasrec saw its biomethane sales double across its commercial vehicle refueling network in the first quarter of this year.

The growth continues the “huge spike” in demand for gas over the past two years, with the company now supplying about seven times more biomethane to the road transport sector than at the start of 2019, Gasrec said in a statement.

“While there has been a steady increase in demand for bio-CNG, bio-LNG has seen huge growth – due largely to its suitability for long-haul work and the 6×2 tractor unit market,” it said.

Sales of bio-LNG from Gasrec’s flagship site at the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal (DIRFT) rose by more than 250 percent in the last twelve months, it said.

Gasrec claims the DIRFT facility is the largest LNG fueling station in Europe. It has the capacity to fuel up to 700 trucks per day.

The company did not give a breakdown of the quantities it sold.

“Demand is growing by the day, as more operators transition to running on cleaner and lower cost biomethane,” James Westcott, chief commercial officer at Gasrec, said.

“The net result is we are seeing some very big fleets ditching diesel altogether and only investing in gas trucks when replacing or adding assets,” he said.

In addition to refueling infrastructure, the firm plans to increase the size of its bio-LNG tanker fleet in order to meet the growing demand for fuel.

Gasrec aims to have up to eight tankers on the road by the end of the year.
