KN said in a statement that this service will enable biomethane producers and suppliers to integrate their operations into the LNG logistics chain and monetize gases produced in Lithuania and across Europe that are injected into the common European gas grid.
According to the firm, this model offers a “flexible and efficient solution relevant to both Lithuanian and international market participants seeking sustainable fuel alternatives.”
KN noted that the initiative will also contribute to the decarbonization of maritime transport – especially in light of the stricter renewable fuel requirements coming into force in 2025 in the EU.
One of the first in Europe
The LNG terminal operator claims that the Klaipėda facility will become one of the first in Europe – and the first in the region – to offer such a service.
Currently, only a few of the 28 operating LNG terminals in Europe provide biomethane liquefaction or virtual liquefaction services.
“This development will significantly enhance the competitiveness of the Klaipėda LNG terminal and further diversify the use of LNG infrastructure without impacting its core function – regasification,” the company said.
The service is expected to launch within the current quarter, following the completion of necessary preparations, including the certification process.
One of the key steps has already been completed as the National Energy Regulatory Council approved amendments to the LNG terminal regulations on July 8, KN said.
FSRU Independence
In March this year, the FSRU Independence completed its 500th ship-to-ship LNG transfer in Klaipeda since the start of operations in 2014.
The majority of LNG volumes originate from Norway and the United States, but the Klaipeda FSRU-based facility has also received LNG from Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Egypt, Algeria, and other countries.
Last December, KN Energies assumed ownership of the FSRU Independence from Hoegh Evi, and the unit was registered under the Lithuanian flag.
Besides this facility, the company’s LNG business also includes projects in Germany, Italy, Brazil, and other countries.
