Finland’s Meyer Turku yard has started building the second LNG-powered cruise ship for Carnival Cruise Line after it delivered Mardi Gras in December last year.
To mark the construction start, the yard held a steel cutting ceremony on Wednesday, according to a statement by Carnival Corporation, the world’s largest cruise ship operator.
Carnival Celebration, a sister vessel to Mardi Gras, will start sailing from Port Miami in November 2022, as part of Carnival Cruise Line’s year-long 50th birthday festivities.
Such as Mardi Gras, the newbuild will accommodate more than 5,200 guests and a crew of 2,000. Guests will have the choice of more than 2,600 staterooms and 180 suites across 11 categories.
The LNG-powered Excel-class vessel will have classical ship lines and predominately blue hull.
To remind, Mardi Gras joined Carnival as the first North American LNG-powered cruise ship.
Following delivery in December, the vessel bunkered LNG in Rotterdam but also in Barcelona ahead of its journey to the US.
